Congratulations to Roosevelt Middle School for placing first in the Fenwick Science Competition. The Fenwick Science Contest is hosted by Fenwick High School and 33 schools participated in the 41st year of the junior middle school competition. The goals in hosting the competition are showcasing their science program and to allow students to grow and learn more through science. This exam had multiple questions and 482 students participated in this event. The students had to take a practice quiz and the top 14 people were chosen as competitors. The competitors were William Brandhorst, Phil Brooks, Reece Brotman, Kevin Bullens, Nora Cullerton, Bora Demirtas, Aaron Iosevich, Charlotte Meyer, Vedant Mundhra, James Panton, Cole Ruehle, Riley Sarsany, Kate Sturgeon, and Peter Zeh. We interviewed Charlotte Meyer, who has participated in the Fenwick Science Contest for 3 years and Mr. Kadlec, the 7th grade science teacher and one of the coaches. The Fenwick Science Contest is a competitive and informative competition for students.

Interview Questions for Students

Q1. Were the questions that they had hard?

Charlotte- The questions were pretty tricky and there were only a few that I was sure I knew. However, I tried to use educated guesses based on what I did know so I wasn’t just choosing them randomly.

Q2. Did you learn anything new from this event?

Charlotte- After having done it for three years I have learned that it is more efficient to get all of the questions done instead of spending time on a few.

Q3. Did you enjoy the event or not?

Charlotte- I did and overall I am very glad that I decided to compete.

Q4. When you were at the event, how did you feel?

Charlotte- The test was a bit stressful, but once it was over I felt great. I enjoyed the tour of Fenwick High School and finding out our school’s results.

Q5. Did you always like science, or were you interested in it for just one year or one specific topic?

Charlotte- I have always been really interested in science, especially environmental science.

Interview Questions for Teacher

Q1. How long has Roosevelt participated in the Fenwick Science Contest?

Mr. Kadlec- The contest has been going on for 40 years and I personally have participated with students for the last 23 years in a row. What happened to the students in the 17 years before, I do not know, but they probably sent students to participate in the contest before I came.

Q2. Do you like participating in this event?

Mr. Kadlec- Yes, I like participating. The way I participate is by facilitating learning and conversations about science. The contest itself does not involve teachers directly, but I am more involved in the preparation and help manage students before and after the contest.

Q3. Was it fun teaching the students?

Mr. Kadlec- Very fun because I love science and the students who are on the Fenwick Science Contest team volunteered to work with science. To me that is a great combination.
