Surely by now, you’ve heard of the new music genre called k-pop. With BTS, BLACKPINK, EXO, GOT7, and such. If you haven’t, well today’s your lucky day! Time for  a mini lesson on k-pop.

As to what k-pop really is, well, wikipedia says that k-pop is a type of music from South Korea. The k-pop listened to now can be traced back to the early 90s, not so long form where we ate right now! The two music groups Deux and H.O.T started off the k-pop streak. Deux was a duo of the two men Lee Hyun Do and Kim Sung Jae. The duo sadly lasted for a mere total of two years after the death of Kim Sung Jae.

H.O.T. was a group of five boys and are considered the first successful k-pop group. H.O.T. is an acronym that stands for Highfive Of Teenagers and debuted in 1996. The group disbanded in 2001 due to contract disagreements in their entertainment company.

As of the present k-pop artists, there is the ever popular BTS. This band has seven members: Kim Namjoon, Kim Seokjin, Min Yoongi, Jung Hoseok, Park Jimin, Kim Taehyung, and Jeon Jungkook. Their stage names are (in the same order): RM, Jin, Suga, J-Hope, Jimin, Taehyung, and Jungkook. BTS debuted in 2013 under Big Hit Entertainment. BTS stands for Bangtan Sonyeondan, which means bulletproof Boy Scouts in Korean. Their songs have been about many social topics that we face today such as mental health, the trying days on the youth in this time, loss, loving yourself, and being yourself. BTS has been the first band since the Beatles to earn three number one albums in less than a single year! They even paid tribute to the Beatles upon receiving this recognition.      The album that really kicked off their fame was Love Yourself. Such to the title, the album is about loving oneself and a variety of other topics.

BLACKPINK has also helped bring k-pop to America. BLACKPINK is a quartet of girls under YG Entertainment and debuted in 2016. The members’ names are: Kim Jisoo, Kim Jennie, Lalisa Manoban, and Roseanne Park. Their stage names are (in the same order): Jisoo, Jennie, Lisa, and Rosé. The album that brought BLACKPINK to fame was Blackpink in Your Area, with the song DDU DU DDU DU. BLACKPINK’s songs have gotten most viewed and downloaded time after time! Despite all of this, they never got to tour internationally until just last year!
