Soon to be made into a movie, the book Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard was published in February 2015, and being her first novel, Aveyard received lots of praise on her fiction piece, and became the #1 New York Times Best-Seller.

Mare Barrow, the main protagonist is introduced as a poor, red-blooded girl. In Red Queen, we are told that people are classified by their blood color, either Silvers, or Reds. Silvers are the superiors, having supernatural abilities, and being born into rich families. Reds are the bottom of the food chain. They are poor, and destined to live plain, boring lives. That is, until it is discovered, she is not only Red, but has the abilities of a Silver.

Days before her life changes for good, Mare meets Cal, a prince hiding out in the Reds territory. Mare tries to pickpocket Cal, and ends up getting exposed. Luckily for Mare, Cal ends up giving her money anyway, and the next day, she is recruited onto the Silver staff.  She is working the choosing ceremony, which is when a girl is chosen to marry the prince, who is soon to be king. Mare becomes angry about how they are better than Reds, and accidentally unleashed a power she never knew she had. When displayed, there’s obviously a cover story.

She is forced to play the role of a long lost Silver, Mareena. She has to marry into the royal family. She meets Cal, and Maven, the princes. The queen despises Mareena, and can read her mind. One wrong move, and she is dead.

There’s much more to the story, and in order to find out what happens to the new princess, you’ll have to read Red Queen, and read on to the next novel, Glass Sword.
