On September 19, 2017, the animation club members went on a field trip to the Museum of Contemporary Arts. One of the few clubs to actually be able to go on a field trip, the animation club members went to the museum to gain ideas on future animations. The exhibit the animation club went to visit was called Takashi Murakami: The Octopus Eats Its Own Leg. Takashi Murakami is a contemporary artist, which basically means that he is still alive and making art. This exhibit showcased some of his work, sketches, and statues. Artists showed the club members around and explained many of his artwork. Takashi Murakami, in most of his work, shows a mouse-like character known as DOB. DOB was based off Mickey Mouse because one day Takashi Murakami wanted to be as famous as Mickey Mouse.

Murakami’s other work often showcased smiling flowers and skulls. He uses a type of artwork everyone calls “Superflat”. Takashi Murakami has a whole number of workers that help him piece by piece each of his paintings to get the final result. Each of his paintings are colorful and he is trying to close the gap between good art and bad art. The field trip was very informative and the paintings were very different.

Cassidy Sturgeon who is in 5th grade exclaimed, “I thought it was really fun. There were a lot of paintings that were very confusing and our tour guide showed us around and showed us the paintings.”

Logan Clancy who is also in 5th grade stated, “A lot of the paintings were very intricate and very disgusting. But overall the paintings weren’t as bad and I would do it over again.” As you can see, the Museum of Contemporary Arts was a very fun and intriguing field trip for the animation club members.
